An artist friend once said, “I never met a media I didn’t like.”
Being an experimental mixed-media artist, I have adopted that
as my mantra. I love to push the limits of whatever media I am
working in beyond the norm and into new and
exciting directions.
I began my journey into mixed media several years ago. I
created a piece where I played with paint, tissue paper and
embellishment, and wasn’t even sure whether or not I liked the
piece at all. But, I took it to a show, put a price on it and put it
with the rest of my paintings. After a little while two women
came to my table. One of the women picked up this particular
piece, flipped it over to look at the price, reached into her
pocket for some cash, handed me the money and walked off. I
was astonished. When they had walked about 20 feet away
from my table the woman who purchased the piece tapped her
friend on the shoulder, lifted the painting she had just bought
up in the air and exclaimed, “Now, THIS is EXACTLY what I have
been looking for.” After I heard that I thought, “And THAT is
EXACTLY why I make art.” It made someone happy. I added to
someone’s life in a way that no one else ever will.
